Description
The collection consists of photographs originally from 2 photograph albums of the Bartel and Schuck families in the 19th century. Although many of the images are undated and unidentified, included was an envelope addressed to Harry and his mother, Mary Bartel. Also included is a calling card for Mary, clippings, advertising cards, and a photographic postcard. Many of the photographs are stamped from studios in Indianapolis, Indiana and Auglaize County, Ohio. Most of the photographs are portraits, but there are a few images of animals and buildings.

Biographical or Historical Data
Harry C. Bartel was born in 1889 and lived in Indianapolis with his parents, John and Mary (Schuck) Bartel and his sister, Gretchen. John Bartel was from Wayne County, Indiana and his parents, William and Sophia Bartel, emigrated from Germany around 1860. Mary (Schuck) Bartel was from Auglaize County, Onio. Her parents, George and Minnie Schuck were born in Germany. Bartel died in Indianapolis in 1990.
Ownership and Custodial History
This collection was received by Rare Books and Manuscripts as a donation. The albums were found in the attic of a house in Lake County, Indiana.
