This collection contains American Civil War documents collected by Carl A. Zenor ranging from 1862 to 1963 and includes an incomplete copy of the Touch the Elbow Songster (1862); a typewritten transcript of a letter sent to Francis M. Busby of Lebanon, Indiana from Edward Reynolds at the headquarters of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division near Atlanta, Georgia (July 31, 1864); a photocopy of an army pass granted to Busby to travel to Alabama and signed by Governor Oliver P. Morton (August 22, 1864); a photocopy of Enoch Scotten's discharge paper from Company G, 99th Indiana Regiment (June 5, 1865); a form letter regarding the 1887 reunion of the 21st (1st Heavy Artillery) Indiana Regiment; photocopies of a letter sent to Zenor from William R. Thompson, Jr. requesting information about Phillip H. Grove, a soldier in the 92nd Indiana Regiment, who helped Thompson's great uncle (a Confederate soldier) while a patient at a prisoner of war hospital (October 9, 1963); and incomplete photocopies of a broadside regarding Co. G, 70th Regiment Indiana Volunteers that includes lists of regimental officers, company officers, and privates (undated).

The Indiana Civil War Centennial Commission was created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1959 and was charged with the responsibility of planning and conducting the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. The commission consisted of 21 members and Carl A. Zenor served as chairman (1960-1964) and executive director (1964-1965). A variety of observances occurred from 1961 to 1965 and Zenor noted that "we are interested not only in commemorating and observing the anniversary of the Civil War, but also in uncovering documents, papers, pictures and relics which pertain to Indiana's war effort." A high school history teacher, Zenor also served as a member of the Indianapolis Civil War Round Table and as executive director of the Indiana Sesquicentennial Commission.
