Description
Chester Pierce was the first African American athlete allowed to play during a college football game below the Mason-Dixon line during Jim Crow era of legally enforced racial segregation in the southern United States. On October 11, 1947, Pierce's Harvard College team faced the University of Virginia. Despite breaking a long-standing "gentleman's agreement" between northern and southern teams by bringing Pierce on trip to Virginia and sending him out on the field, the Harvard Crimson played on.
