Description
"Great Western Detective League Officer Beau Longstreet is dispatched to assist Cheyenne Sheriff Habb Tyler with a suspected bank fraud case. The bank president and an accomplice plot to defraud Cattleman's Bank of twenty-five thousand dollars by a fraudulent loan. Longstreet uses a loan application scheme to entrap the banker while using Great Western Detective League offices to verify banker and borrower. While in Cheyenne, Longstreet gets wind of range war brewing in Johnson County Wyoming between open range cattle barons and homesteaders there. When the banker and his accomplice make off with the bank's money, League offices along the Union Pacific line are notified. The banker and his partner are quickly apprehended. Longstreet and Sheriff Tyler's young deputy Seth Adams collect the prisoners and recover the bank's money. Longstreet is impressed by young Adams. After refusing Longstreet's marriage proposal, Maddie O'Rourke moved to Buffalo in Johnson County Wyoming. She invests in a small ranch owned by Dan and Susan Shaw. The Shaws, like all the small ranchers and homesteaders in Johnson County occupy land once considered open range by cattle barons who make up the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. Stock detectives are hired to drive the small ranchers out by intimidation and false rustling allegations, including a high- profile lynching. When Dan Shaw is threatened, Maddie sends for Beau. Longstreet determines to go to Maddie's aid. Colonel Crook sends Briscoe Cane along to have Beau's back. Cane goes undercover as a stock detective while Longstreet becomes Dan Shaw's bodyguard. Maddie and Beau struggle with feelings neither can deny and an uncertain future. Cattle barons Buck Mc Gant and Davis Chesterfield become increasingly frustrated with their inability to clear their Johnson County open range. When one of their stock detectives is arrested for the attempted murder of Dan Shaw, they hire a professional assassin to kill him. Cane and Longstreet kill the assassin. Mc Gant determines to raise an army and invade Johnson County. Seth Adams alerts Longstreet to the big rancher's plan. Longstreet and Cane help Johnson County Sheriff Ben Whitaker organize a defense. Longstreet and Cane meet the invaders at Nate Champion's K.C. Ranch. Sheriff Whitaker counter attacks with a huge posse, driving the army of stock detectives to fort up at Mc Gant's T.A. ranch, while Chesterfield appeals to the Governor. The siege is broken when the U. S. army intervenes. Sheriff Whitaker announces his retirement. Dan urges Longstreet to run for the office. Whitaker offers him a deputy's job until the election that fall. Beau and Maddie see a bridge to their future and wed. Seth Adams takes Longstreet's position in the league offices in Denver, where he encounters Pinkerton Agent Samantha Maples, recently transferred to Denver. A circus comes to town. The circus parade provides diversion along with a counterfeit bill to cover a bank robbery. Seth quickly unravels the plot and recovers the bank's money.
