Notes

Description
According to the Introduction description inside the Master Index in part - "The story of the American frontier that is recounted in the 26 volumes of "The Old West" series was one of history's great real-life dramas, performed on a scale that no artificer of the imagination could contrive and with a fervor that mere actors could never evince. The setting itself was overwhelming: vast, severe, wondrously beautiful and brutally demanding, a land that promised both paradise and pain to those who came in quest of its riches.....From the Indians who lived in harmony with the wilderness through the first white trappers who threaded its lonely trails to the gunfighters and gamblers, cowboys and sod busters, railroad builders and pioneer schoolteachers who transformed it, the participants in the Old West drama were larger than life. They included people of exceptional virtue and others of noteworthy wickedness, towering figures of noble strength and some of the meanest, most cussed rascals ever to leave a scratch on the face of civilization......The Old West's places and characters will be found in this master index, along with the events that transpired, the institutions that took root, the towns that were built and the customs that were adopted as people and land come together to form the frontier. Topics listed on the index pages range from Apache Indians to Wells Fargo, from Billy the Kid to range wars. In each entry, titles of individual volumes are indicated by abbreviations that are explained in a key at the bottom of the index pages........indicating text references and illustrations...."
